Busy Year: Georgetown Speedway Announces Active 2023 Schedule Â

Written by Andrew Reigel

GEORGETOWN, DE – 2023: a year of firsts.

BD Motorsports Media LLC, set for its eighth season at the helm of Georgetown Speedway, has set an active 23 schedule of events for the Sussex County facility, complete with new additions and returning favorites.

The 23 agenda is highlighted by two appearances by the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco and the inaugural visit by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS).

In total, 15 events are on the docket for the 23 season, four of which pay a minimum of $6,000 to win.

An Open Practice will precede the racing season on Tuesday, April 4, allowing teams a chance to break in the reworked oval before the Season Opener on Friday, April 7.

USAC East Coast Sprint Cars will headline the April 7 lid-lifter alongside the Modifieds, racing for a $3,000 top prize.

Modifieds and USAC East Coast Sprint Cars will also share the spotlight on Friday, Sept. 29 kicking off a massive Camp Barnes Benefit weekend.

The historic Camp Barnes Benefit Stock Car Race will be held Saturday, Sept. 30, the 51st edition presented by the Delaware State Police.

STSS Modifieds and Crate 602 Sportsman will make their first visit on Tuesday, Aug. 29 (rain date: Aug. 30) with the ‘Blast at the Beach, the popular summer classic in its 10th anniversary edition. The Modifieds headline the program racing 35 laps for a $6,000 payday.

The final STSS stop rounds out the season for Georgetown Friday-Saturday Oct. 27-28 with the ‘Mid-Atlantic Championship Weekend. Both the Modifieds and Super Late Models battle for $7,000 winners shares during the weekend, which concludes the STSS Rent Equip/Party Central South Region for Modifieds and Belmonts Garage South Region for Crate 602 Sportsman.

New on the schedule in 2023 is the first-ever visit by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, also a first for the state of Delaware on Friday, April 28. The top Super Late Model drivers in the country clash for a massive $18,049 top prize in the Melvin L. Joseph Memorial.

The Mid-Atlantic Sprint Series (MASS) and Crate 602 Sportsman headline the inaugural ‘Tidal Wave on Friday, Aug. 18. The event features $10 grandstand admission and a larger pay structure to be announced for the Crate 602 Sportsman contingent.

A new edition for the 23 agenda is a “Summer Thunderâ mini-series. The first of the two events will showcase the Modifieds with a $4,000 top prize on Thursday, June 22. The Modifieds and Super Late Models look to heat up Georgetown on Thursday, Aug. 3 with twin 25-lap events, each paying $3,500 to win.

Garden Motorsports Inc. presents “Monster Truckzâ on September 22-24. Three complete days of Monster Truck action will take place on the speedway grounds.

Familiar favorites also continue as the Mark “Cootâ Williams Memorial for Super Late Models runs alongside the ‘Battle of the Bay for the First State Chevrolet RUSH Late Models on Thursday, April 13.

The April 13 date marks the first of five Super Late Model appearances in 23.

Friday, June 2 provides another edition of the ‘Deron Rust Memorial, as the Modifieds go for 33 laps and $3,960 to win.

The Gary Simpson Memorial “12K for the 12Kâ event is back for the second year in a row. In honor of the late Delaware driver, car owner and sponsor Gary Simpson, the Friday, July 21 race will see the Modifieds race for 32 laps and $12,000 to win.

The winged Sprint Cars visit Georgetown on three separate occasions in 23 with two different series taking center stage.

The Mid-Atlantic Sprint Series (MASS) 305 Sprint Cars join the Modifieds on Friday, May 12 and the Crate 602 Sportsman for the ‘Tidal Wave on Aug. 18.

The United Racing Club (URC) 360 Sprint Cars visit Georgetown on Friday, Sept. 8 for their only visit alongside the Modifieds and First State Chevrolet RUSH Late Models.
