What an electrifying weekend it was for racing in Georgetown, Delaware, as the 2024 Mid-Atlantic Championships kicked off with a bang! “The Dirt Doctor,” Jamie Friesen, delivered two incredible racing surfaces that set the stage for an action-packed weekend, thrilling fans and keeping them on the edge of their seats!
The excitement began on Friday night, where multiple classes took to the track to qualify for their feature events slated for Saturday. Among the competing classes were the high-octane Millman’s NAPA Auto Parts STSS Modifieds and the local favorites, the Stockley Speed & Supply Super Late Models. The night was packed with adrenaline as the Small-Block Modifieds, Feebs Distilling Delmarva Chargers, Delaware Super Trucks, and Southern Delaware Vintage Stock Cars all lined up for their chance to shine!
As the qualifying heats fired up, the atmosphere crackled with anticipation. Billy Pauch Jr., Ryan Watt, and Paul Mancini took home the heat race wins in the Millman’s NAPA Auto Parts STSS Modifieds, while hometown hero Amanda Robinson and the ever-talented Rick Eckert celebrated victory in the Stockley Speed & Supply Super Late Models. The Small-Block Modified heats were won by Paul Mancini, Anthony Perrego, and Ryan Godown.
When the green flag waved for the thrilling 30-Lap Small-Block Modified feature, it was Brandon Grosso and the determined Danny Bouc leading the charge. But chaos erupted right from the get-go as HJ Bunting came to a grinding halt on the back straightaway. After a quick reset, Grosso shot out in front, but Bouc was hot on his heels. The intensity ramped up as Bouc finally overtook Grosso, only for the drama to escalate when Grosso’s car began to smoke, bringing out the caution on Lap 3.
With the field stacked up once again, Bouc found himself in the lead with fierce competition breathing down his neck, especially from Alex Yankowski. As the race progressed, the tension grew with each lap, and traffic became a factor. Bouc expertly maneuvered through, while Yankowski stayed locked in, ready to pounce. The laps flew by, and as they neared the finish, the excitement reached fever pitch.
With just five laps remaining, Yankowski ramped up the pressure, battling hard with Bouc. As they approached the final stretches, Yankowski dove low on Lap 26, sailing past Bouc’s number 6 and seizing the lead! With clear track ahead, Yankowski executed his plan flawlessly, weaving through the last of the lap traffic with precision. He crossed the finish line first, clinching a spectacular $3,000 payday along with a thrilling $2,000 gambler’s bonus, and as the dust settled behind him, the top five was rounded out by Bouc, Logan Watt, Ryan Godown, and Anthony Perrego, ensuring that the night was nothing short of exhilarating for both racers and fans alike!
