12k for the 12k: $12,000-to-win Georgetown Event Honors Gary Simpson July 21

Written by Chris Moore

GEORGETOWN, DE - $12k for the 12k.

The second annual ‘Gary Simpson Memorial takes place next Friday, July 21 at the historic Georgetown Speedway.

Georgetown hosts one of its most lucrative races of the season in memory of a longtime supporter, Gary Simpson.

In recognition of the cars Simpson owned and drove – which adorned the number ‘12K on the side – the winner of the 32-lap Millmans NAPA Auto Parts Modified feature walks away with a whopping $12,000 payday.

Drivers such as Seaford, Del.s Ricky Elliott, Phoenix, N.Y.s Larry Wight, Walden, N.Y.s Anthony Perrego, Potsdam, N.Y.s Michael Maresca, and Covington Township, Pa.s Alex Yankowski all piloted Simpsons No. 12K ride.

Simpson supported Delaware racing as a driver, car owner, sponsor and often donated his time and equipment.

Savannah, N.Y.s Matt Sheppard made the tow for the inaugural event in 2022 and took the $12,000 top prize home to the Empire State.

This year, on top of the $12,000 winners share, NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series points are on the line as well.

Neshanic Station, N.J.s Matt Stangle leads the Millmans NAPA Modified standings into the Gary Simpson Memorial over Pipersville, Pa.s Danny Bouc and Ringoes, N.J.s Ryan Godown.

The Blue Hen Dispose-All Crate 602 Sportsman will make the tow as well in honor of Gary Simpson, racing for 20-laps and a $1,212 top prize.

Chalfont, Pa.s Greg Humlhanz holds a 23-point advantage over Cream Ridge, N.J.s Ryan Simmons. Frankford, Del.s Scott Hitchens rounds out the top three, one-point behind Simmons.

The First State Chevrolet RUSH Late Models also join the card, with Seaford, Del.s Trevor Collins topping the standings over Millsboro, Del.s Nick Davis and Georgetown, Del.s Matt Hill.

Also, on the program – running 12-lap, features only events – are the Southern Delaware Vintage Stock Cars, Little Lincolns, Delaware Super Trucks, and Delmarva Chargers.

For the July 21 event, pit gates open at 4 p.m., with grandstand gates unlocked at 5 p.m. Hot laps get underway at 6:30 p.m., with racing at 7:30 p.m.

Grandstand admission is $25. Seniors (ages 65-plus) and Students (ages 13-17) pay $20. Kids (ages 9-12) pay $10. Children 8 and under are FREE.

Pit admission is $40 (ages 13 and up), $35 (NASCAR Members), $10 for Kids (ages 6-12) and $2 for Children ages 5 and under.

All Georgetown Speedway events will again be streamed live on FloRacing (www.floracing.tv) produced by the Dirt Track Digest TV production team.

Georgetown Speedway, originally constructed by Melvin L. Joseph in 1949, is located at the intersection of Route 113 and Speedway Road in Georgetown, Del., just miles from the Delaware beaches and less than a 40-minute drive from Ocean City, Md.
