Ready to Rip: Jake Marine Memorial Launches STSS Season at Georgetown March 9

Written by Chris Moore

GEORGETOWN, DE – Ready to rip.

After a successful weeklong trip in Florida, the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco prepares to kick off the Northeast Dirt Modified racing season.

Georgetown Speedway plays host to the 2024 lid-lifter, with the ‘Jake Marine Memorial’ at the Sussex County oval on Saturday, March 9.

The season opens with a bang, as the STSS Modifieds begin the quest for the NJ Quality Drywall South Region and the Ollie’s Overall Championship with a 40-lap, $8,500-to-win main event.

The event will heavily feature the No. 85, honoring an icon in the Delaware racing community, Jake Marine, whose cars he owned adorned that number on the side.

In total, a purse of more than $31,000 is on the line to open the new season, with bonuses and awards also up for grabs in Southern Delaware.

This year’s ‘Jake Marine Memorial’ will be the first of its kind at Georgetown Speedway and the second annual event honoring Marine.

Last year’s event – the first annual – was won by Savannah, N.Y.’s Matt Sheppard in thrilling fashion at neighboring Delaware International Speedway in Delmar, Del.

Sheppard passed Keystone State driver Mike Gular coming to the white flag to take the victory away, leading only the final two laps of the affair.

Also, on tap for the season opener are the STSS Crate 602 Sportsman who will kick off their 2024 chase for the Belmont’s Garage South Region Championship.

Their 25-lap event pays $1,850 to the winner of the South Region opener.

The Delaware Super Trucks and Delmarva Chargers are also on the docket in 12-lap, features only affairs.

The night of racing is preceded by an Open Practice on Friday, March 8. All divisions are welcome.

For the March 8 practice, pit gates open at 4 p.m., with practice rounds continuing from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Grandstand admission is FREE.

Pit admission is $30 for Adults (ages 13 & up, Non-Members) and $25 for Members. Kids (ages 6-12) are $10, and Children (ages 5 & under) are $2.

For the March 9 event, pit gates open at noon, with the grandstands unlocking at 1 p.m. Penske Racing Shocks hot laps are slated for 2:30 p.m. with racing to follow at 3:30 p.m.

Grandstand admission is $25 for Adults, $20 for Seniors (ages 65 & up) and Students (ages 13-17). Kids (ages 9-12) are admitted for $10 and Children 8 & under are FREE.

Pit admission is $45 (ages 13 & up, Non-Members) and $40 for Members. Kids (ages 6-12) are admitted for $10 and Children ages 5 & under are $2.
